  1. In 1966, Jim was 20 years old and trying
  2. to pitch well enough to stay in the major
  3. leagues. He developed an unusual
  4. superstition that season. One morning,
  5. his wife, Susie, made him pancakes for
  6. breakfast. That night, he pitched -- and
  7. won. For the next three times he
  8. pitched, Susie made Jim pancakes for
  9. breakfast -- and he won each time.
  10. Then, one day, Jim woke up late and
  11. didnΓÇÖt have time for pancakes. He
  12. pitched that night against the Athletics
  13. -- and lost. In all, Jim won all eight
  14. games he pitched that season after a
  15. pancake breakfast. To this day, old
  16. friends still call Jim "Cakes."
