- In 1966, Jim was 20 years old and trying
- to pitch well enough to stay in the major
- leagues. He developed an unusual
- superstition that season. One morning,
- his wife, Susie, made him pancakes for
- breakfast. That night, he pitched -- and
- won. For the next three times he
- pitched, Susie made Jim pancakes for
- breakfast -- and he won each time.
- Then, one day, Jim woke up late and
- didnΓÇÖt have time for pancakes. He
- pitched that night against the Athletics
- -- and lost. In all, Jim won all eight
- games he pitched that season after a
- pancake breakfast. To this day, old
- friends still call Jim "Cakes."
